From structural bonds under pressure to the power of stillness: David Chuang on crafting psychological depth in The Truth Within.
While scientists probe deep into the Earth's crust and ocean trenches in search of answers about humanity, David Chuang, the 43-year-old Taiwanese director and Golden Bell Award recipient, pursues a different path. He peels away the thin outer shell that encases the core of human nature, seeking the authentic truth that pulses within an unseen inner emptiness.
Beneath the calm, composed demeanor of the mastermind behind the psychological thriller series The Truth Within—often concealed under his signature cap—lies a presence that prompts curiosity about his inner thoughts. Is he sketching out a new murder scenario, untangling narrative knots for his characters, or quietly observing the moral decay of society? Yet the moment conversation begins, this stern young man transforms. A philosophical depth emerges, accompanied by genuine compassion and humility that leaves one wondering about the true essence of his character.
One also senses a considerable sense of humor in this gifted director—perhaps influenced by his two mischievous preschool-aged children, whom he admits can be “more terrifying than anything I’ve ever created on screen” when their energy runs wild. Moreover, a profound understanding of human nature consistently forms the central axis of his storytelling.
In this exclusive interview for TrueVisions, Director Chuang reveals, with complete candor, the concepts and creative process behind The Truth Within. He invites readers on a journey to explore the mysterious overlapping realms within our own minds and to adopt a more nuanced perspective toward the society that surrounds us.
Structural Bonds: Friendship Forged Under Pressure
The Truth Within marks another directorial collaboration between Chuang and Kuan-chung Chen , the dynamic young partner with whom he first worked on The Victims’ Game.
Chuang was brought in to take over the project after the original director withdrew abruptly. Although he already regarded Chen as one of Taiwan’s most capable assistant directors, this series represented Chen’s first full directing role. “With only a month to prepare—script adjustments, production restructuring, defining the visual language.” the director recalls. “There was no luxury for long conversations about chemistry. We simply had to work”
Under immense time pressure—rewriting scripts, restructuring production entirely—the intense demands revealed Chen’s true dedication and sense of responsibility. The two developed an instinctive working rhythm that required few words. “Trust wasn’t built through meetings,” Chuang adds. “it was built through action.”
This relationship reached its strongest form during Danger Zone, a complex 24-episode action series. Chuang describes it as a “structural bond,” forged under enormous pressure and shared risk, which has since become a model for younger directors at his company, 10 United Films.
"For me, authorship is not about visual dominance. It is about clarity of perspective—because once perspective is clear, every department knows where to stand. That clarity allows the structure to become stable enough to support multiple voices without losing identity."

Decoding the Craft: When Perspective Transcends Personal Style
Directing The Truth Within presented an additional challenge when Jinrui Li (Sword Rose) joined as the third director. Chuang had to align everyone’s vision to ensure a consistent visual language and pacing.
“Once perspective is clear, every department knows where to stand. That clarity allows the structure to become stable enough to support multiple voices without losing identity.”
With Kuan-chung Chen, mutual understanding came almost instinctively through eye contact alone. Chuang therefore devoted extra time to Li, laying a solid foundation. “Not to impose a style, but to build shared understanding.”
To keep pace with the tight schedule, filming proceeded across multiple units simultaneously while maintaining narrative coherence. Chuang assigned the disciplined and precise cinematographer Zilong Liu to the main unit, brought in Eric Chao—familiar from Danger Zone—for the secondary unit, and enlisted master editor Guangwei Du to shape the storytelling structure. This ensured viewers experienced the same pressure as the characters while retaining space to think alongside them.
Chuang emphasizes that this approach was not about copying a style but preserving internal logic, emotional rhythm, and camera distance so the work remained unified. Continuity was paramount in a multi-director production.

Peeling Back the Human Core: Uncovering Truth Through Layers
“The Truth Within reflects how I see human nature,” the director says, “I don’t believe people are inherently good or evil. At the core, human behavior is driven by survival.”
The series centers on Qi Sizhe’s (played by Luo Yunxi) internal struggle to uncover the true circumstances of his girlfriend Yu Fei’s death. Chuang explains that Qi cannot solve the case without grasping the killer’s logic. “Only by peeling away the layers of each crime scene he can grasp the internal reasoning behind the act. Only by understanding he can catch them. And only by catching them he can begin to untangle his unresolved connection to Yu Fei.”
Given the constraints of serialized storytelling, character backstory relies heavily on carefully designed scene details. Chuang incorporated psychological principles to craft crime scenes, drawing out symbols, habits, and lifestyles that reflect the killer’s mental state, allowing the environment to mirror the psyche.
A striking example is the chilling spider cave: its vast emptiness, damp and jagged surfaces evoke the killer’s isolation and obsession. Once viewers sense the emotional logic, the space becomes oppressive and unsettling, transforming into a psychological landscape.
“Understanding is not the same as excusing. My goal is not to romanticize violence, but to examine how a person reaches that point. In that sense, “truth” is never pure. It is something we arrive at through layers of distortion.”
Darkness and Music: The Power to Evoke Psychological Emotion
“When I think about darkness, I’m not only thinking about visual darkness. I’m thinking about the audience’s physical and emotional experience—what they feel in their body while watching.” David’s gaze remains steady, reflecting a clear conviction that he seeks to craft narratives in which viewers can share an intimate experience with the characters.
“Cinemography determines the audience’s vantage point. From what distance do we allow them to observe the characters? Sometimes we draw closer, inviting empathy—through breath, hesitation, fragility. At other times, we create distance, permitting observation rather than immersion. That balance is deliberate.”
Most viewers regard him as a “master of psychological tension,” yet he speaks with humility: “I focus more on precision than on tension itself. What defines my approach is discipline—especially in what we choose not to reveal. In The Truth Within, we deliberately avoided explicit backstories or direct emotional confessions from the killers. Instead, we embedded that understanding within the visual design, symbolic elements, and structural cues. This presents a profound challenge in embedding such elements quietly within the frame.”
The same principle applies to his approach to score composition, in which he collaborated closely with the COX SOUNDTRACK team. This young director places great emphasis on the creative process: he shared pieces of music he admired with the team as emotional references, fine-tuning the perspective and density of the notes to align precisely with the narrative intent.
“Music is a storytelling tool. It conveys what dialogue cannot articulate and what lies beyond the lens in the imagination.”

Precision in Rhythm: The Power of Luo Yunxi’s Stillness
Chuang’s casting decisions are remarkably sharp; his gaze during auditions penetrates to the performer’s core. This method made Luo Yunxi the ideal choice for Qi Sizhe, the stoic forensic pathologist suppressing inner turmoil.
“What immediately stood out in Luo Yunxi was his natural rationality and composure,” Chuang notes. “There is a precision in the way he carries himself. At the same time, he has a pure gaze that allows the audience to empathize without overt emotional display.”
In Qi Si-zhe’s world, everything revolves around one objective: uncovering the truth of Yu Fei’s death. His emotions plunge deeply, free of distraction. Chuang often chose to cut lighter aspects of the character’s life to preserve focus, while collaborating with the styling team to refine his credible professional appearance.
“Luo brought remarkable discipline to that restraint. He understood that the power of this role lies in what remains unspoken. The audience senses Qi Sizhe’s internal tension through subtle shifts—gaze, breath, silence. This collaboration reminded me that transformation doesn’t require dramatic change. Sometimes the most meaningful shift happens through clarity, restraint, and trust in the audience.”

Balance Amid the Gray, and a New Creative Chapter
Despite years immersed in tales of crime and twisted minds, Chuang’s focused observation of detail does not darken his worldview—it sharpens perception of nuance.
“I don’t see the world as black or white,” he says, “Most of it exists in gray. The more you observe, the more nuance you find.”
His two children remain the anchor that returns him to reality, resetting him instantly no matter how exhausting the work or how frantic the schedule.
“I also cherish the opportunity to create, It’s a privilege.” the handsome director adds, “I don’t carry darkness home with me. I finish work, go home, and my kids reset me instantly.”
He humbly attributes his success and awards to the audience’s enduring support. “Thank you to audiences in Thailand and around the world who have supported this work. We spend years building these stories, but once they’re released, they belong to the audience. Thank you for giving our work your time and trust. That responsibility is something I never take lightly.”
Before concluding, the brilliant director quietly shares an exciting secret: he is preparing a new project that will film partly in Thailand, hoping it will foster exchange and collaboration with leading Thai directors.
The journey through cases and the labyrinth of the mind in The Truth Within may not ultimately seek a final answer to “who is the killer.” Rather, it is David Chuang inviting us to confront the “truth” hidden beneath outer layers and distortions. In the end, his work offers more than entertainment: it serves as a mirror, reflecting—with unflinching honesty—the hidden essence of humanity that resides within us all.
