The wait is over. Luo Yun Xi returns in the grand-scale fantasy detective drama Shadow Punisher, streaming on iQIYI today!
At midday today, one of the year's most anticipated productions arrives: Shadow Punisher, a genre-blending series that fuses criminal investigation, fantasy and period drama. It is the latest work from superstar Luo Yunxi, and his fans have been waiting for it with bated breath.
Adapted from Wang Ke's [verify] three-volume novel of the same name, the 30-episode series is set in the fictional "37th year of the Hongyun reign of the Daxi Dynasty" [verify]. It follows Li Si, also known as Master Qing Yang, who conceals his true identity to infiltrate the Divine Constables Bureau and uncover the truth behind the death of the Fourth Prince. He joins forces with Bai Zhen Zhu, a formidable female forensic examiner, and Meng Rui, a gifted martial-arts detective. Together they untangle eight bizarre cases and expose the sinister conspiracy behind them.
Alongside Luo Yunxi, the lead cast includes heartthrob Alen Fang, known for Till the End of the Moon, Whispers of Fate and Zhan Zhao Adventures, and rising actress Shen Yujie, from Love Is Panacea and both seasons of Fearless. A host of acclaimed performers round out the ensemble.

A "Ghost Detective" Without Ghosts?
Wang Ke's original novel, Mei Ying Shen Bu, never ties its characters directly to ghosts or the supernatural.
Instead, it builds its hero from Li Si's brilliance as a detective: a composed, razor-sharp mind with an uncanny gift for deduction from unexpected angles, along with courage, stubbornness and unshakable resolve. These qualities earn him the nickname "Gui Bu" (鬼捕), or "Ghost Catcher", a figurative title for a detective so formidable he inspires fear, and one without equal.
The phrase has deep roots in Chinese culture. In traditional belief, a ghost catcher is an official of the underworld charged with hunting down wicked spirits, the legendary Zhong Kui among them. The courage and strength of these figures have long earned the admiration of the Chinese people, and anyone who faces down evil and brings it to justice is, almost by instinct, called a ghost catcher.
Wang Ke has woven such beliefs and folklore into his writing time and again, but nowhere more memorably than in Mei Ying Shen Bu, where the "ghost catcher" archetype defines his protagonist and powers a gripping, compulsively watchable narrative.
The Series vs. the Novel
Multiple sources confirm that the series runs for 30 episodes. Adapting all three novels, which contain 13 major cases, was a formidable challenge. The production team chose to trim certain cases so that the central storyline could flow smoothly and the tension stay high, without overwhelming viewers with too many mysteries.
The major cases in the novels are organized by volume:
- Volume One, Land of Slaughter (the opening chapter): the cases of Demon World, Nine Giants, The Hidden Taoist, Return of the Soul and Land of Slaughter.
- Volume Two, Illusory Prison (a labyrinth of unexpectedly tangled secrets): Deep Eyes, Illusory Prison, Spider Bondage, Disease of Evil and Shards of Mirror.
- Volume Three, Three-Star Demon (the grand finale): Blood of Darkness, The Futile Door and Three-Star Demon.
The series version has six officially confirmed cases, announced at the wrap of filming*:
- Case One: The Immortal Flower, Bewitching Children Case – Fragrant Beauty Dies, Withered Blood Case
- Case Two: The Demon Box Murder – The Premonition Case
- Case Three: Identifying the Bones to Find Her Mother, Pitiful Orphaned Girl – Ming Ling Serial Floating Corpses Case
- Case Four: Ascension to Enlightenment, Embracing the Moon Case
- Case Five: Shadow Puppet Resurrection Murder Case (Calamity)
- Case Six: Final Battle
Every case traces back to the root of a greater evil, and to the tragedy whose truth Li Si is determined to uncover in order to restore peace and happiness to the people.
Viewers hoping for lingering romantic glances between the leads may need to temper expectations. Director Zheng Weiwen [verify], acclaimed for The Untamed [verify], has said the series will have "no added sweetness and no focus on couple pairings." Instead it commits fully to authentic investigation, breaking from the formulas of today's period dramas. The bond among the three central characters is driven by one shared purpose: solving cases together and protecting the peace of the realm.

No Detail Overlooked
Zheng Weiwen is renowned for his atmospheric period worlds and his commitment to developing every character. For Shadow Punisher he opted for rigorous realism: a painstakingly built ancient village, a ritual altar, and forensic instruments modeled on real historical records. The palette pairs ink-black tones with classical hues inspired by the Dunhuang murals.
The standout is Li Si's signature weapon, the "Heaven-Measuring Ruler" (量天尺). Designed to embody a scholar's elegance while serving as a superb weapon, it reportedly went through 17 versions before the design was finalized. It combines musical-formation mechanisms, clockwork and astronomy.
Art direction and costuming are equally impressive. Chief costume designer Wang Wei [verify] dressed each character with elegance. Luo Yun Xi's vermilion official's robe, paired with a high-bound topknot, projects a cold, haunting presence, while the deep-black constable's uniform exudes menace and authority.
Even the smallest props were crafted with care, including puppet dolls, a compass, copper movable type and embossed secret boxes. Each was conceived in layers to help guard the story's secrets and echo its mystery.
Don't miss the electrifying performances of Luo Yun Xi, Alen Fang and Shen Yu Jie in Shadow Punisher, premiering today on the iQIYI app, available through TrueVisions NOW on the NOW ENT package at 199 baht per month.
