After a long wait, iQIYI recently released the full trailer for Shadow Punisher, giving viewers a glimpse of its intense fantasy action. Alongside the trailer came the release of the series' soundtrack (OST), composed and performed by Liu Yuning and Sa Dingding. Pre-registrations quickly surged past 1M as fans eagerly anticipate the return of the "King of Xianxia."

Uncovering the Truth Behind Mystical Crimes

Adapted from Wang Ke’s popular three-volume novel of the same name, Shadow Punisher is co-directed by Zheng Weiwen and Liu Chong, with a screenplay by Chen Yuhan and Hou Wenwen.

Set in the 37th year of the Hongyun era during the Dasi Dynasty, the fallen Kingdom of Liluo resurfaces alongside the revival of the "Five Mystical Arts": Shadow Puppet, Immortal Demon, Lightwing Poison Insect, Mirror Flower Water Moon, and Human Replication. These dark arts are tied to a series of bizarre crimes.

At the center of the story is Li Si (Luo Yunxi), also known as "Lord Qingyang," a sharp-eyed investigator who spots details others miss. He infiltrates the Imperial Detective Agency to uncover the truth behind the death of the Fourth Prince.

During his investigation, he teams up with Bai Zhenzhu (Shen Yujie), a top female forensic physician, and Meng Rui (Fang Yilun), a skilled investigator haunted by his sister’s disappearance.

All three have personal motives for joining the case. Initial distrust marks their partnership, but as events escalate, they are forced to stand together.

The cases range from a young woman’s body drained of blood in nine coffins, demon plants in the forbidden Heifeng Forest, and human cocoons among flower bushes, to villagers transforming into bloodthirsty creatures and a royal grand-nephew moving days after his soul has departed.

Though the cases initially seem unrelated, the clues gradually point toward a massive conspiracy threatening the imperial court itself.

Cutting-Edge Production Elevates the Viewing Experience

In an interview with CCTV, Luo Yunxi noted that the cases in the series blend elegance with imagination, featuring murder mysteries designed differently from standard crime dramas.

The producers also expanded the story with a spin-off mini-series, Phantom Constable: Caged Bird, which explores the backstories of key side characters.

Another highlight is the filming inside a 2,500-square-meter Virtual Studio at the Hengdian World Studios film park. Production began on June 13, 2025, and wrapped on September 27, 2025.

The studio featured high-spec LED screens supporting up to 200 frames per second, allowing precise control over lighting and atmospheric conditions. This proved especially crucial for fantasy sets like the Ghost Gate, Tianshu Tower, Golden Dragon Temple, Yaozhong Tower, and nighttime riverside scenes.

Using a Virtual Studio allowed actors to react to real-time environment visuals instead of performing solely in front of green screens—a technique the directing team noted made performances and reactions feel far more natural.

AI was also utilized during the initial modeling stage for props such as compasses, puppets, bronze type molds, and puzzle boxes, before they were brought to life using 3D printing technology.

Costumes and weapons were crafted with distinct details. Key weapons—including the Sky-Measuring Ruler, Hanyan Sword, and Yanjie Blade—were custom-designed to match each character's personality and evolving journey.
